Waste Not Wednesday (January 15)

Jun 13, 2025 | Waste Not Wednesday

Perhaps you got a new one as a gift, maybe it was just time for an upgrade, but whatever the reason, you don’t have to banish your old smartphone or tablet to the junk drawer. With the use of WiFi (no cellular connection needed), you can add some simple apps to turn your old devices into fantastic tech upgrades.

If your old device has a camera, you can add the Skype app (or other video conference app) and program it to automatically connect and voila, you now have a security camera you can access to check in on things back at home when you’re away. You also can delete all the old apps, photos, etc. from the device that used up memory and then download your (or your child’s) favorite movies so you can view them while traveling without wearing down the battery on your phone so it is ready in case of emergencies.

For more ideas on ways to repurpose your smartphones and tablets, see this article from USA Today (www.usatoday.com/story/tech/columnist/komando/2018/05/29/old-cell-phone-how-repurpose-recycle/633759002/).
