Residents Urged to Stay Off the Landings Until Further Notice

Oct 9, 2016 | Hurricane Matthew

General Manager Shari Haldeman seriously urges all Landings residents to heed the instructions released by Chatham Emergency Management Agency (CEMA) this morning (October 9) and stay off island, despite the County’s evacuation order being lifted at 5 p.m. today (October 9).

Conditions in The Landings currently include no power and active gas leaks. While Atlanta Gas Light is onsite with a damage assessment crew, these issues have not yet been resolved. In addition, Southside Fire Department currently has personnel, but no equipment on island.

Later today, SSFD, accompanied by crews from the state, will be arriving on island to help clear the main roads.

At this time, The Landings Association has limited personnel working in The Landings and do not have enough team members to check individual homes. If you come back early, you might not be able to reach your home. We continue to work to clear main roads, and work with utility providers to make certain all conditions are safe for all property owners when re-entry is allowed.

Please understand that cars coming onto the island will significantly hamper efforts to clear the roads and address active hazards within the community.

When you do return to Chatham County, you must have proof of residency (e.g., driver’s license, deed of home or business, utility bill). You only need one of these documents. A curfew remains in effect from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m., and you are not allowed on the streets during those hours.

Again, though the mandatory evacuation order for Chatham County is lifted as of 5 p.m. today (October 9), we urge you to remain safely sheltered where you are, at least for today.

Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.
