Please note that a brief synopsis is provided for pertinent incidents that Security responds to during the previous week. All incidents are not covered in the weekly recap. Statistics for incident reports are provided below.
Vehicle Fire
On Thursday, October 23, Landings Security and Chatham County Fire Department (CCFD) responded to a report of a vehicle fire at the intersection of Bartram Road and Landings Way North. A Waste Management employee reported that his truck was smoking, and he believed someone might have thrown a lithium battery into the trash which caused the smoke. To be on the safe side, CCFD sprayed the inside of the truck with water to prevent anything from catching fire and prevent further smoking.
Golf Cart Accident & DUI Arrest
On Friday, October 24, Landings Security, Chatham County Police Department (CCPD), CCFD, and Chatham Emergency Services (CES) responded to Tidewater Square for a report of a golf cart accident. Upon arrival, the resident driver informed Landings Security that he hit the curb because he was on his phone and flipped the cart. Upon CCPD’s arrival, the man told the Officer that he had been drinking. Before being taken into custody by CCPD for DUI, the man was treated on scene for minor injuries. A tow truck arrived on scene to remove the golf cart.
Suspicious Incidents
On Sunday, October 26, Landings Security responded to Sundew Road for a report of suspicious people in the area. The caller stated that she heard gunshots from her back yard around 11 p.m. and witnessed two individuals carrying a dead deer to a heavy-duty golf cart. An Officer responded to and patrolled the area with negative results. A follow-up call was placed to the resident. TLA is working with Georgia Department of Wildlife to investigate this incident, and increase patrols in the community.
On Tuesday, October 28, Landings Security spoke with a resident regarding a suspicious incident that occurred the previous day during a delivery at their home. The resident explained that they had received a call from the delivery driver stating that he needed entry into the gate, which they allowed. In preparation for the delivery driver, the resident had left lights on in the driveway and on the front porch. However, when the driver arrived, he bypassed the lighted area and went to a darkened doorway on the side of the home. The homeowner thought the behavior was strange and wanted to report it to Security.
Continuing Education
Security Director Tim Cook recently passed his ASIS Certified Protection Professional (CPP) exam, earning him the “Triple Crown” of ASIS certifications. Cook already has his Physical Security Professional (PSP) and Professional Certified Investigator (PCI) certifications. The CPP is considered the “gold standard” for security management as it demonstrates a professional’s knowledge in all key areas of security management. Only about 330 people worldwide hold all three ASIS Board certifications.
Government Shutdown and Crime Trends
The current government shutdown could increase crime. Studies have indicated that more crimes occur when more time has passed since welfare payments were issued. As welfare benefits are delayed or delays appear forthcoming, criminals turn to theft, burglary, or robbery to bridge the financial gap. Several law enforcement agencies around the country have reported an increase in criminal activity, and unincorporated Chatham County has witnessed a slight increase in burglaries from 13 per 4-week period to 19 in the last four weeks. Please make sure you secure your vehicles, homes, and valuables.
