Project Background
Application for the path was made in August of 2022, with an estimated cost of $3,025,000. The federal government authorized funds in the amount of $2,420,000 to cover a portion of the project. The remaining cost, approximately $605,000, is funded by Chatham County Special Purpose Local Options Sales Tax (SPLOST).
After various iterations of the proposal, Chatham County held an Open House for the public at the Skidaway Island Baptist Church on December 5, 2024. At the Open House, schematics of the path were posted and feedback taken by those in attendance and additional feedback was submitted online.
According to the County, of the feedback received, 106 commenters were in support of the project, 210 were opposed, 17 were uncommitted, and 45 expressing some conditional support. Chatham County then modified the proposed path based on that feedback. The updated proposal states that the path will run on County property along the west side of Green Island Road from South Harbor to the southwest corner of the intersection of McWhorter, Green Island Road, Diamond Causeway, and The Landings’ Main Gate.
