Oct 11, 2016 | Hurricane Matthew

Recycling Center Closed Through Wednesday of Next Week (October 19)
The Landings Association’s Recycling Center is closed this week (October 19) as all staff time has been re-allocated to storm cleanup.

Sunset Pavilion Closed Until October 19
The Sunset Pavilion is closed through Wednesday (October 19) as staff efforts continue to repair and clean the facility after Hurricane Matthew.

Yard Debris
Please help prevent flooding on your street!  Residents are reminded that yard debris is not to be placed on storm drain caps, roadways, or in the gutter valleys along the roadways. Additionally, do not allow your lawn contractors or tree companies to place items on the curb. As shown in the diagram below, debris should be placed in the right-of-way, behind the curb or edge of pavement.

The Landings Association will place debris removed from the street in the right-of-way because the first priority in an emergency of this nature is to ensure that emergency vehicles can access any home in the community. The right-of-way is the area approximately 10 feet from the curb or edge of payment (see illustration above).  Thereafter, our Public Works crews and contractors will begin the process of removing the debris from the right-of-way.

Tree Removal Rule Relaxed After Matthew
In an effort to assist residents with the timely removal of damaged trees, The Landings Association temporarily is relaxing the permit requirement for tree removal until further notice.  Residents can contract a tree service to have a damaged tree (located on private property) removed without a permit from The Landings Association. Please make certain the company takes the tree with them and does not leave it on your property.

Damaged Trees
In the event there are damaged trees (e.g. hanging limbs, etc.) located on common property, please submit the request via SeeClickFix utilizing the “Tree Damage on Common Property – Mathew” request type, or email amberc@landings.org.  To report roadways blocked due to fallen trees, please contact ingridp@landings.org or call 598-5508.

Fallen Trees
Some residents have contacted The Landings Association with concerns about who is responsible for fallen trees on private property. If a tree falls on a person’s property, that tree becomes the responsibility of the affected homeowner up to their property line. A good rule of thumb to remember is you are responsible for whatever part of the tree is on your lot, no matter where the tree came from. (See illustration below.) In other words, if the trunk of the tree is on your property and the top of the tree is on your neighbor’s property, they are responsible for the top and you are responsible for the bottom. Likewise, if there is a dangerous tree or limb hanging or leaning over your property, please contact your neighbor directly.  Remember, if you don’t know your neighbor you can look up their contact information in the reverse directory of your 2016 Landings Directory.

CDD Issuing Special Restoration Permits
The Landings Association’s Community Development staff currently is in the field, reaching out to residents whose homes were damaged by Matthew. They are issuing lavender property restoration permits for in-kind repairs and replacement. All Landings Association Architectural fees associated with this work have been waived and this permit is valid for six months following the storm event.  Please notify the Community Development Department (598-5518) if you have damage and they have not yet reached your home.

Public Works Addresses Mailboxes and Street Signs
Many mailboxes and street signs were damaged during the storm and they also are being addressed this week throughout our community. The main goal is to have your mailbox up and operational so that you will not experience a delay in receiving mail. Once all boxes are operational, Public Works staff will double back and paint and number the mailboxes to make them consistent with all others in the community. In case you have a damaged, destroyed, or missing mailbox on your property, please submit the request via SeeClickFix utilizing the “Mailbox damage – Matthew” request type.

Vendor Prequalification
There is no truth to the rumor that Chatham County has a list of prequalified contractors. However, Chatham County does require a valid business license for all contractors working in the County. Chatham County has set up a satellite business office at their Public Works building (7226 Varnadoe Drive) for contractors from out of the area to obtain a business license.  This office is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. You also may call their hotline number to verify if a vendor or a contractor has a valid business license (657-0554).

Contractors/Vendors Entering The Landings
To assist residents with timely contractor response, The Landings Association is waiving the gate access fee for contractors. However, residents must preauthorize all vendors and guests to their specific address.

Comcast
Comcast currently is working to restore service to all of their Landings customers. Due to high call volume please expect at least 48 hours before a call is returned to you from their dedicated Landings line (912-629-6838).
