Spring is just around the corner, and many of you already may be tidying up your yards. With the season comes an uptick in pine straw vendors, and 2025 is proving to be no exception. Just last week, a vendor gained unauthorized access to our community by tailgating through the gate. After a resident reported being scammed, a Landings Security Officer quickly located the vendor at another home. Chatham County Police Department (CCPD) was called, issued a Criminal Trespass Notice, and the individuals were escorted off the property by Security.
What is a Pine Straw Scam?
Here’s how the scam typically works:
- A crew of two to four men gains access to the neighborhood for a single job.
- They drive around offering pine straw installation at a seemingly low rate per bale.
- Once the homeowner agrees and the job is done, the final bill is often double or triple the quoted price.
- If the homeowner objects, the workers become confrontational, pressuring them into paying.
- Most homeowners end up paying more than expected to avoid conflict.
Did You Know?
This scam isn’t new. It’s been around for years and is common across Southern states. A quick Google search on “pine straw scams in Georgia” yields numerous articles and warnings. The most recent one I found, dated October 10, 2024, came out of Newnan, Georgia (www.times-herald.com/news/beware-of-pine-straw-scam-npd-warns-residents/article_fd005214-8737-11ef-af09-03cdf7b557e8.html). Don’t let yourself become another headline!
Tips to Protect Yourself:
- Hire reputable landscaping companies with references. Business cards alone don’t guarantee legitimacy.
- Always get a written estimate before work begins and never pay upfront.
- Insist that any cost increases be communicated before the work proceeds.
- Report any unsolicited door-to-door vendors immediately to Landings Security (912-598-1982, Option 2).
Stay vigilant and enjoy a scam-free spring!
